Rick DeMark and Mark Hews will be the convenors of the Viability Working Group. Together, they bring a tremendous amount of experience in sustainability, conservation, and food systems. Under their leadership, the Viability Working Group will ensure agreement and clarity on the goals, approaches, and indicators established to advance the Viability Initiative.

The Viability Initiative, the the first strategic effort of the NH Food Alliance, outlines approaches and recommendations to address the challenges and opportunities identified by farmers, fishermen, and food entrepreneurs. The NH Food Alliance has convened a Viability Working Group, which is a diverse team made up of individuals representing various sectors of the food system and regions of New Hampshire.

The Kearsarge Food Hub in Bradford, NH, is a nonprofit organization working to build “a restorative food system,” as they call it, to rejuvenate the Kearsarge community by strengthening the local food system and it’s contributors.

An inspirational model of a viable local food business, Throwback Brewery in North Hampton, NH, is bringing a local food philosophy to the world of beer. They source ingredients from within 200 miles for their craft beers and seasonal pub menu.

Beyond their great food and beer, Throwback has also made strides in the way of enterprise viability through their market development plans and resource use. Recently, we caught up with Nicole Carrier, co-founder of Throwback, to discuss the brewery, pub, and their new venture in farming.

Seeds of Community is a program based in Peterborough, NH focused on community development and farmer training. Andrea Cadwell is the catalyst of this endeavor, connecting community resources and creating partnerships to design a collaborative and impactful program. NH Food Alliance fellow, Jessica Newnan, recently sat down to talk to Andrea about her work in the food system.
